Co-working spaces have seen a surge in popularity recently. Everywhere you look, another one seems to have popped up. But whilst they may be trendy among freelancers and start-ups, they’ll never beat having your own office. Here are eight reasons why:
In a co-working space, chances are you’ll be at the mercy of someone else when it comes to music choice. Perhaps they’d let you select the occasional track. But would others look kindly on your choice of Kate Bush hits circa 1978? Don’t risk ostracism; get your own office and blast Wuthering Heights as loud as you want.
Depending on the nature of your business, you may need to be careful with confidentiality. If you work sensitively with well-known brands, for example, you need to know people aren’t glancing at your computer screen as they pass. Only your own office can offer that privacy.
With your own office, you can arrange things exactly as you want them. Want big squishy sofas? No problem. Fancy a ping-pong table in the corner? You can have one. Want to paint a giant portrait of your own face on the wall? That’s OK too.
There’s a level of gravitas and sophistication that comes with having your own office. It shows you have a long-term plan and displays confidence in your business. This will in turn instil confidence in your clients.
One of the oft-touted benefits of co-working spaces is that they’re sociable. But this could be more of a curse than a blessing. If you’re easily distracted or find it difficult to motivate yourself, having a bunch of perky entrepreneurs trying to network with you could prove disastrous. In your own office you’ll be free of distractions and can focus on your work.
Having your own private space to host clients in is always going to look more professional than doing it in a co-working space. Again, it’s about instilling confidence in your clients. If they see you’re serious and successful enough to have your own office, they’ll be more likely to trust you and your business.
With your own space, you can nurture that all-important company culture without it being diluted by outside forces. Having the freedom to operate your space exactly as you want it will enable you to cultivate company values and a sense of camaraderie. This will lift morale and encourage productivity in your team.
If you’re a reasonably large company, a co-working space just won’t be able to provide the space you need. If you’re a small company, you’re probably hoping to expand in the future. Having your own office will give you the space to do that.
